Activism Actually Works
And other good notes to end your year on
From students to bloggers, to NGOs and Hedge Funds, climate activists of all shapes and sizes have made waves in 2021. Save Our Happy Place activists, *clears throat ...you*, advocated for the passing of climate policy in the Infrastructure Bill, and that bill passed. From the looks of it, there is hope and reason to be optimistic about turning the tides in favor of a more sustainable future. Will we have to keep advocating? Yes. We will need to keep applying pressure? Yes. But could it actually work? Yes.
But don’t take my word for it. Here is a quote from a recent Oxford Study touting the power of activism:
“The most far-reaching threat to fossil fuel companies comes from increased social and political stigmatization of their activities and the resultant uncertainties around their long-term viability.”
And here is another quote from the oil & gas company Enbridge Energy:
“Unprecedented actions by state, local and tribal governments to attempt to regulate, and ultimately shut down, existing pipeline infrastructure is a new and emerging risk not imagined just five years ago.”
So what does this mean for you?
What you say matters. What you do matters. How you live matters. You can make a difference. In this podcast episode of the The Argument by NY Times, they explain how taking consistent activism measures, like those offered in Save Our Happy Place, is the best way for you to combat climate change. The democratic and capitalist society we already live in is our greatest tool for evoking change. Voting literally at polls, figuratively with your money, and continuously voicing your opinion to your representatives is the most effective way to evoke systemic change for the systemic issues fueling climate change.

Let’s close out 2021 with one last simple action. Invite your friends and family to take part in climate action with you by sharing Save Our Happy Place with them. The more people that actively engage in the climate movement the more likely we are to ward off the most serious effects of climate change.
