Three Actions to Bolster the US Leading Up to COP26
Who, what, when, where, why, how?
COP26, a conference born of the United Nations’ Paris Climate Agreement that brings together world leaders to define and negotiate global climate change solutions, begins this Sunday, October 31st in Glasgow, Scotland. The 2021 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported that it’s still in the realm of possibilities to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees by cutting global emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050. These climate negotiations are paramount, because we are not currently on track to cut enough emissions.
What does the US need to do?
For the United States, passing the Build Back Better Plan is essential to meeting our commitments, and positioning us to urge other countries to do so too. The Build Back Better Plan includes:
Clean Energy Standards (CES)
Clean Energy Tax Credits
Revolutionary updates to the US electric grid/systems
Hundreds of billions of dollars to tackle climate change
Why hasn’t Congress passed these climate policies yet?
Two obstructive Senators have been thorns in the side of US climate policy: Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona & Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Email them each now to let them know their decisions touch more lives than just their constituency.
This is a big deal… What else are we doing about it?
Congress must pass the bold climate investments this week in order to set the stage for President Biden to take the lead at COP26. Message your representatives with the Sunrise Movement.
