COP26 & Biden’s New Climate Plans
Who, what, when, where, why, how?
COP26, a conference born of the United Nations’ Paris Climate Agreement that brings together world leaders to define and negotiate global climate change solutions, began on Sunday, October 31st in Glasgow, Scotland. Over the next two weeks world leaders will convene on official negotiations over how to tackle climate change. World leaders are currently presenting their action plans to address climate change. COP26 anticipated accomplishments are:
Action plans to reach global net zero carbon emissions by 2050
Plans to protect communities and natural habitats from the already present and anticipated effects of climate change
Secure finances to assist less affluent nations in combating climate change
Plan systems for working together towards collective climate goal
What did the U.S. / Biden have to contribute?
“Right now, we’re still falling short. There’s no more time to hang back or sit on the fence or argue amongst ourselves.” - President Biden to COP26.
President Biden was unable to ratify legislation with meaningful climate policies before arriving at COP26. This shortfall was due in part to West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin’s refusal to support clean energy programs. In response, the White House is proposing a scaled-back version of this legislation that would still reduce carbon emissions and appropriate $555 billion towards combating climate change. Biden is still assuring COP26 that the U.S. will commit to a 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
What should we do at this point?
Biden’s Climate Plan B still needs votes to pass in Congress. Email Joe Manchin to let him know supporting renewable energy is the best long term solution for the planet and West Virginia.
